The Tremiti Islands, anciently Diomedee, since they preserve the ancient secret of Diomede, 12 miles offshore the Gargano, are renamed “pearls of the Adriatic” because of their enchanting beauty. The historical centre, religious and inhabited area St. Nicola, where the ancient Benedictine abbey rises, St. Domino, covered with woods of Pino of Aleppo, with its clear waters and blue cobalt depths, its caves to visit, and the small islands Crepaccio and Caprara, with the famous “Architello” graven in the calcareous rock. The islands are daily attainable in high season, by sea with motorships departing from the little harbour of Peschici.
The millennial Forest UMBRA with its thick vegetative mantle from beechwoods and woods of Pino of Aleppo, is an example of the strong naturalistic value of the Gargano. 14 paths traced by the Italian Corpo Forestale, all easily practicable and marked by yellow gangs, give the possibility to enjoy a little of summer coolness and the marvelous kinds of flora and fauna that exist there. The forest has an informative point, Center visitors, with annexed the Naturalistic Museum.
The Caves, marvellous natural attractions, are extended along the coast north from Mattinata to Vieste, it is possibly to visit them with daily excursions in powerboats departing from the harbour of Peschici. Every cave has its own name and its history narrated by the excursion guide.
Archaeology In the GARGANO: the Gargano, preserve still the signs of ancient lives: the necropolis “ Salata” , not too far from Peschici, ancient cemetery complex dated to the III and IV century and the Grottone of Manaccora, on the side north of the Manaccora Bay, an important place for the recovery of archaeological material, sign of domestic practices in the XII-XI a.c. To the times of the medioevo is the abbey of Saint Maria of Calena, placed at the feet of Peschici.
St. Giovanni Rotondo And Mountain SANT'ANGELO, places of high spirituality, the first one “house” of Padre Pio, where he lies in the homonym sanctuary and destination of pilgrimage; the second, a characteristic suburb with low houses, has the sanctuary on a rock erected in the fifth century devoted Michael to the archangel, here appeared, and the ruins of the Norman castle with the Grave of Rotari of the XII century.
